Approximately 125 Ancient Greek students from eight
schools participated in this year's Ancient Greek Day. The theme of the
day was Socrates' statement: o bios anexetastos ou biotos anthropo;
"The unexamined life is not worth living."
UConn professors Elias Tomazos, Roger Travis,
Allen Ward and Tom Suits shared their perspectives on the classics with
the students. Two teachers came without students to observe. Art teacher
Mary Ann Hall from NFA and Latin teacher Gerry Kuenkler from Valley
Regional HS volunteered to lead workshops.
CT Ancient Greek Day has grown from three schools in 2000 to eight
schools this year, including Avon HS, Conard HS, Glastonbury HS,
Hartford Classical Magnet HS, Hopkins School, Norwich Free Academy,
Wilton HS, and Woodstock HS. This was Hopkins' first year and teacher
Jon Anderson said that his school would be delighted to come again. All
participants received a T-shirt with the theme of the day in Greek and
the owl from the Athenian tetradrachm.
Students participated in a variety of workshops including workshops on
making an ancient Athenian Juror's ID tag, learning Greek Dancing,
making ostraka pottery ballots, learning about heroic themes in game
design, playing Greco mythology Bingo, touring the Greek Theater under
construction at UCONN, and singing Greek songs. A "Socrates' Cafe
Philosophical Discussion" and a poster contest were also held. NFA Greek
3/4 students performed a puppet theatre skit. NFA alumni Melissa
Spellman and Ashley "Ace" Acevedo returned to Greek Day to help
organize.
Students brought mezedes for all to share and Mrs. Maria Tomazos of the
Paideia Center hosted us with a terrific Greek luncheon. Students won
awards for posters and outstanding participation. NFA Senior Tina
Provatas, Greek 4, won special recognition for her leadership in
teaching Greek Dancing for the last 4 years at Greek Day.
Winning the poster contests were Jesse Babbitt, NFA Greek 1, for "Best
Composition," and Emma Fontaine, NFA Greek 2, for "Best Use of
Theme." -- Nina Barclay, NFA
